COACHING - SHOULD IT BE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE?

The prospect of being a coach in addition to all your other responsibilities can be over-whelming. And granted, the topic of coaching can be huge. So do you really need to be a coach? Is it worth your time? The reality is if you’re in a leadership position and people are looking to you for direction, you already are a coach. The real question is, how are you doing?

Coaching is all about encouraging, improving and challenging your team. It is as simple as noticing how your team is performing and then letting them know you notice. In other words, coaching is the process of letting people know that what they do matters to you!

Follow these steps and you will be a “Super Bowl” Coach...

  • Define a vision for your team-What is the Goal?

  • Discover who your team is? Every one gets motivated for different reasons. Do you know what they are?

  • Notice Good Work everyday. The more you notice the more it will continue.

  • Don’t let performance that needs improved go unnoticed. Encourage and improve your people everyday.

  • Don’t be afraid to challenge performance that HAS to change. Find a solution, agree together and follow through.

  • Track your progress in a Coach’s Playbook.

  • KELLY'S CORNER - CELEBRATING SUCCESS IN THE WORKPLACE

Why celebrate success?  The answer is simple. Good work that gets noticed gets repeated. Also, realize that it doesn't have to be management to initiate the celebration. Celebrate each other. The real opportunity is to find the right motivators, rewards and encouragement for your teams.  Let’s start with Three Success Steps when motivating, rewarding or encouraging your teams:

    • Consistency

    • One Motivational Tool doesn’t work for everyone.

    • Get Feedback

Before you start...Ask yourself these two questions... Does celebration belong in the workplace?  When is it too much?

The Answer to the above questions is YES and NEVER!!!!! In today’s job market, it is becoming extremely difficult to retain great team members! We have to Celebrate their successes, reward Great performance and encourage continued great work!

Make recognizing your team members' part of your daily routine.

Good managers remember to recognize and motivate team members. Great Team Players do it every day. The following are some proven methods for making sure that praising team-members becomes part of your daily routine.

Creative and In-Expensive Ideas to Get Started

    • Make team-members a part of your weekly “to do” list. Add the names of the people who are on your team to your list of goals to accomplish. Then cross off names as you praise them.

    • Use voice mail. Rather than using it only to assign tasks, team-members voice mail messages praising them for a job well done.

    • Write notes at the end of the day. Keep a stack of note cards on your desk where you can’t ignore them. At the end of the day, take a minute to write thank-you notes to any team member who made a difference that day.

    • At the beginning of the day, put five coins in your pocket. Then, during the day, each time you praise a team member, transfer a coin to your other pocket. It may sound corny, but once you get in the habit, you’ll start relying on tricks like this one.

    • Start a "Success File" - This is a great tip to celebrate you. Encourage the rest of your team to do the same. Send a letter of appreciation for something special they did on the job. The letter itself is a nice tactic, but take it a step further. With the letter enclose a file folder labeled “Success File”. Tell the team member to file this letter in the file.

Tell them that there may be times when they don’t feel good about themselves or feel unmotivated. When this happens, read these letters. They’re proof that they are a success, that they have special capability and that they are a special person. “You did it before; you can do it again!”
